NERA Network 14 – Multicultural Education Research Minutes from network meeting 2019

NERA Network 14 – Multicultural Education Research Minutes from network meeting March 7, 2019

Participants

Osa Lundberg, Malin Brännström and Shu Tabira

Agenda:

The agenda for this meeting is:

  1. Conceptual and theoretical development in the network.
  2. Practical matters:
    • Work more closely with Network 4 Justice thru Education
  • Have two separate networks
  • Have Nera conference sessions closer or next door to Network 4
    • Preconference in 2020? (no longer available)
    • Principles for choosing new convenors for Network 14
    • Choosing a new convenor for 2021
  1. Other matters.

The meeting was opened by the current convenor Osa Lundberg. A brief summary of the contributions to the network was made. In all 19 abstracts were submitted to the conference. All were accepted and there were three full sessions in the final program; however, five cancellations were made. In all there were 14 paper presentations made.

Conceptual and theoretical developments in the network

Many of the presentations concerned provisions, policy and perspectives on newly arrived students experiences in different educational contexts. The theoretical frames included: policy discourse, liminality, socio-cultural perspectives, caring – “mothering and othering”, interpretative phenomenological analysis, post-structural, postcolonial and whiteness, hermeneutic phenomenology, sociology of knowledge, learnification discourse, social constructivism, critical multiculturalism and action research. Some of the objects of studies inclued migration narratives, school segregation, school choice, language and identity development, social integration, understanding `race´ and whiteness in higher education, marketization, neoliberalism, institutional racism and memory work.

Practical matters

We discussed the possibility of network 14 working more closely together with network 4 Social Justice Through Education. Network 4 and network 14 have similar interests and research focus. Having these sessions in closer proximity would perhaps allow for some collaboration and exchange at the next conference. Network 14 Multicultural Education Research would remain a separate network but there could be a collaborative effort to support attendance and submission of abstracts to these networks and attract participants to attend both kinds of network sessions.

There will be no pre-conferences at NERA 2020. This is just a temporary according to the NERA board.

No new principles were decided for choosing a new convenor. Osa Lundberg will continue as convenor for NERA 2020. Principles for deciding a convenor will be discussed next time at the next NERA conference in Turku.

Other matters

No other matters were discussed.
