These systems are grounded on principles of equality, accessibility, and inclusion for everybody, regardless of their backgrounds, capabilities, or other defining features. We are accustomed to think that these principles aim at providing safety and equity for people in different vulnerable positions (Nordic health and welfare statistics, 2026). However, societies today are changing quickly, speeding up, and creating uncertainty among citizens and institutions (Rosa, 2026). A wave of market-oriented governance logics in the form of New Public Management has pervaded the Nordic welfare systems for decades, complicating social considerations by prioritizing economic efficiency parameters (Pedersen 2011, 2014, 2018). During the last few years, we have also been witnessing the hardening of the values of the ordinary people, calling for more responsibility for individuals for themselves and questioning the solidarity for those most vulnerable.

The focus of this roundtable discussion is to explore how we can oppose to these individualistic trends from a social pedagogical standpoint. How does social pedagogy come to expression in discussions and different working fields within the Nordic countries. How do practitioners and researchers make use of social pedagogical ideas today when combating the hardening values and the voices questioning the work with people in vulnerable situations? Which challenges do we need to address? How can social pedagogues keep supporting the empowerment and enhancing the life opportunities for individuals in marginalized positions? And how can they get empowered themselves?

During the roundtable discussion, examples from theory, practice, and research from different Nordic countries will be presented and discussed, inviting the participants in the session to join the discussion and share experiences, thoughts, and ideas.

References

Nordic health and welfare statistics.
