This pre-conference invites an intellectual commoning foregrounding ethical trust, open-mindedness, intelligent accountability, and the gladness of encounters, despite lines of difference. The overarching theme of the pre-conference is one that confronts educators and urbanists alike, namely, how to create an environment that allows life to happen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
As grounds for gathering in silence and darkness, and after an introductory conversation, the point of departure is the screening of a documentary film, The Human Scale (2012). After lunch, from the principles evinced in the film guiding the practice of Danish architect Jan Gehl, the participants may collectively consider how such themes relate to broader educational concerns. Through a visually stimulated workshop, participants may perform their understanding and judgement. As a wrap-up for the day, there is a joint walk and visit to a museum on the way to the dinner.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The above-mentioned aim of this year\u2019s pre-conference works alongside a larger gesture: convening the network itself and getting acquainted with peers, hopefully inspiring upcoming endeavours.
